Vietti

Piedmont

Four generations of the Vietti family have made great wines in the tiny medieval town of Castiglione Falletto in the centre of the Barolo area. All fruit is estate grown and new parcels of prized land are being acquired. Production of each of their wines is extremely limited to between 150 and 950 cases. These are truly hand-crafted wines. Vietti has an international following.

"I can't think of too many estates in Piedmont that have raised the bar higher than Vietti has over the last decade or so. Virtually every wine that emerges from these cellars is outstanding, and many are profound. Winemaker Luca Currado, his brother-in-law Mario Cordero and their staff have taken the early groundbreaking work of Alfredo and Lucia Currado and built upon those successes, reaching an unprecedented level of consistency and quality across their entire range."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2010

"Few wineries manage to please both enthusiasts and professionals like this historic Castiglione Falleto operation, brilliantly managed by Luca Currado. In many ways Vietti's wines are on the cusp where modern sensibilities meet tradition. There is no cast-iron policy behind their style, just a deep knowledge of the characteristics of each of the marvellous vineyards, such as Rocche, Brunate, Lazzarito and Villero, as well as an ability to bring out the best of their other varieties like Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis and Moscato."

Barolo CastiglioneBarolo 2007 "Castiglione"
"The 2007 Barolo Castiglione deftly balances the open, radiant personality of the vintage with considerable underlying structure. Warm, dense and full-bodied, the 2007 Barolo Castiglione flows effortlessly across the palate with generous fruit and fabulous overall balance. The wine was even better when I tasted it from bottle a few months later. It is another overachieving wine from Vietti and a bottle that is exceedingly fairly priced. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. PerbaccoLanghe 2008 "Perbacco"
Two-thousand and eight is a wonderful vintage for Perbacco. Combining parcels in Bricco Boschis, Liste, Brunella, Crocetta, Pernanno, Fossati, Ravera in Novello and Scarrone, Luca Currado blends a supple wine offering up generous fruit along with menthol, spices and hard candy aromas. Showing notable intensity while retaining and essentially mid-weight style, the round, suave tannins add to the long and refined finish.

Rajat Parr's 2010 book Secrets of the Sommeliers lists Vietti's Perbacco as his example of "value" Nebbiolo with the following quote: "A simple but gloriously balanced and delectable Nebbiolo, dominated by the pure taste of tart cherry. Flavour is concentrated on the midpalate, but falls off in the finish." Page 55.
