Hunter's

Blenheim, New Zealand

Jane Hunter was among the first to see the immense potential of Marlborough as a wine-producing region. Together with her late husband Ernie, Jane established Hunter's Wines in the picturesque Wairau Valley in 1983. Since then she has won national and international acclaim for her contribution to the New Zealand wine industry. Hunter's Wines has won more than 60 gold medals at national and international wine competitions. The 1991 Sauvignon Blanc achieved unprecedented honour by winning a gold medal and the Marquis de Goulaine Trophy as the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world at the 1992 International Wine & Spirit Competition. In 1995, Hunter's Wines claimed the inaugural Black Diamond Award at the 1995 InterVin International Wine Competition in North America. Hunter's Wines was one of only nine wineries world-wide to win the three gold medals required to qualify for the top awards. Hunter's was also one of the first wineries in New Zealand to receive ISO 9000 accreditation and is licensed to carry the New Zealand Way brand.

Since its inception, Hunter's Wines has produced wines of distinctive and outstanding character. The fruit flavours and pure fresh style of the acclaimed Hunter's Sauvignon Blanc Oak Aged and Hunter's Sauvignon Blanc create a lasting impression. Both fulfill Jane's guiding principal - to create consistent, quality wines that are also extremely good value.

Hunter's Wines was a pioneer in the development of Sauvignon Blanc Oak Aged and Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. The Sauvignon Blanc is both a delight and constant challenge to produce, demanding the very ripest fruit and detailed attention in the winery. Sitting on the wisteria-clad verandah of the weatherboard villa which houses Hunter's restaurant, visitors can unhurriedly sample Hunter's Sauvignon Blanc Oak Aged.

"If there is one company that can be seen to have started the whole international story called 'Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc' it is Hunter's...(they) got the magic started."
Bob Campbell MW, 2003

Hunters Sauvignon BlancSauvignon Blanc 2010
"Hunter's goes from strength to strength, consistently producing flawless wines with tremendous varietal character. Given the quantity and quality of its production it is a winery of world standing, and certainly among the top dozen in Australasia. Hunter's Sauvignon Blanc is unchallenged as one of New Zealand's benchmark Sauvignon Blancs. Drawn from a number of vineyards in the Wairau Valley, each parcel is fermented separately in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures, the fermentation taking four weeks. The blending of the components takes place shortly prior to bottling in mid-year."
James Halliday. Wine Companion. 2001 Edition.

Hunters Pinot NoirPinot Noir 2009
The fruit for this wine comes from the Wairau Valley, Marlborough. This wine was made in small batches using a variety of different winemaking techniques to try and enhance the individual clones and vineyards character. A portion of the fruit was hand picked and was plunged in small open vats until completion of ferment. This allowed lighter fruit components to be expressed. The balance of the fruit was machine picked and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The ferment was pumped over twice a day with temperatures of up to 32 degrees being reached to extract the colour and tannins for the backbone of the wine. A percentage of the ferment was transferred to barrels to complete the fermentation in new oak. The remaining components were aged in one and two year old French oak barriques for ten months before being blended. The wine was given a light egg white fining before being bottled.

This Pinot Noir has plum, spice, cherry and charry oak on the nose. The palate has ripe, plump, fleshy Pinot fruit, with a soft round texture, fine tannins and moderate length.
