Château Fortia

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône

Château Fortia holds an important place in the history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It was here that Baron Le Roy de Boiseaumarie was instrumental in the establishment of the Appellation Contrôlée system. Since Bruno Le Roy took over in 1994 and engaged the well know Cornas oenologist Jean-Luc Colombo as winemaker, Château Fortia is back on form. This is one of the few Châteauneuf-du-Papes that contains a high proportion of syrah, usually 40%, allowing these wines a longer than average life.

Château FortiaChâteauneuf-du-Pape 2005 "Cuvée du Baron"
Created in the memory of the Domaine's founder, Baron Le Roy de Boiseaumarie.
"Deep red. Seductive strawberry and garrigue on the nose, with suave anise and dried flowers adding complexity. Dried cherry and bitter chocolate flavors gain sweetness with air, as well as dusty tannic grip. Nicely balanced."
90 points, Int'l Wine Cellar, Jan/Feb 2008

Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2006 "Cuvée du Baron"
Created in the memory of the Domaine's founder, Baron Le Roy de Boiseaumarie.
"Ruby-red. Gamey cherry and blackberry aromas are complicated by smoked meat and tapenade. Taut, sharply focused cherry and plum flavors finish with a refreshing bitterness and tannic bite. Needs some time to flesh out."
89-92 points, Int'l Wine Cellar, Jan/Feb 2008

"Rich but restrained, with graphite, game, hot stone, tobacco and plum sauce notes allied to a surprisingly grippy frame that extends through the lengthy finish. best from 2009 to 2023. 3,915 cases made."
91 points, Wine Spectator, Nov 15,2008
