Continuum Estate

Napa Valley

In 1906 Cesare Mondavi immigrated to the United States from Italy in pursuit of the American Dream. He moved his family in 1922 from Hibbing, Minnesota to the California wine country. From their humble beginnings in the grape shipping business, the Mondavi family has thrived and branched out in several directions. Today the combined presence of family members has established the Mondavi name as one of the foremost in the world of fine wine.

Continuum is yet another page in the Mondavi family legacy, a "5th beginning". Founded in 2005, it is a partnership between members of the Robert, Marcia and Tim Mondavi families. It is a rededication and refinement of the family's longstanding commitment to excellence in winemaking. Continuum's goal is to produce a single wine that is recognized among the finest in the world.

The partners in Continuum represent three generations. At the helm is Tim Mondavi who led the winegrowing team at Robert Mondavi Winery for 30 years. He is joined in guiding the vision and direction by his sister Marcia, his father Robert and Robert's wife Margrit. Their combined passion and creativity are the primary inspiration for this important new beginning. Carissa Mondavi is the first of the third generation to join the winery.

The Continuum partnership is more than just the ongoing legacy of the Mondavi family. It is a renewed commitment to the innovation, excellence, and artistic expression in grape growing and winemaking. The grapes for both the 2005 and 2006 vintages come from vineyards in the Oakville appellation, cultivated by the Mondavi family for decades. The wines are raised with respectful and time honored techniques, acquired over four generations and 85 years of experience. The grapes are hand harvested into small lug-boxes, hand-sorted and fed by gravity into small Oak Tanks for fermentation. The wines are aged in 100% new French Oak barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

ContinuumContinuum 2008
"A remarkable effort, offering riveting, expressive aromas of mocha, currant, mineral, herb, black licorice, tar and pebble, this is intense, structured, balanced, nuanced and firm, finishing with a gutsy richness and sophistication. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Best from 2013 through 2023. 2,200 cases made."
96 points, Wine Spectator, July 2011

"(71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot) Good full medium ruby. Aromas of dark berries, dark chocolate and graphite minerality, lifted by a whiff of orange peel; vibrant and cool but not green. Large-scaled and voluptuous yet light on its feet, with lovely floral perfume to the flavours of black cherry, minerals and sexy caramel oak. This very young and broad wine finishes with well-buffered ripe tannins, captivating sweetness and superb aromatic persistence. Seems every bit as strong as the 2007 bottling, and perhaps even more refined."
95 points, International Wine Cellar, May/June 2011

"The 2008 Continuum is predominantly an estate effort, with 70% of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon rises to 71 percent and there's a touch of merlot, with a bit less new oak.
The result is far more perfumed and fresh (than the 2007), with smoked tobacco leaf and dried flower scents and bright huckleberry and cassis flavours. There's a much purer fruit signature, with sinewy tannins and a dark stone-mineral presence that already shows tremendous potential to age. As a sign of the project's future, it shows Tim Mondavi's wisdom in moving across the valley and up to the hills."
