Caymus Vineyards

Napa Valley

Since its founding in 1972, Caymus Vineyards has focused its attention on the production of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner, his wife Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner built their winery among the vines planted on the family's ranch in Rutherford, a district soon recognized for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. The Wagners' first production of just 240 cases came from the 1972 harvest. In 1975, they produced their first "Special Selection" Cabernet, made from the outstanding lots of that vintage. Special Selection Cabernet is produced only in vintages that Chuck Wagner feels are appropriate for this bottling; no Special Selection was made in 1977, 1993 or 1996. Special Selection is the only wine to have been named "wine of the year" twice by Wine Spectator magazine; both these wines, from the 1984 and 1990 vintages, were made by Chuck Wagner.
In Wine Spectator magazine (November 15, 2006), Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons were rated against each other for quality and consistency since 1990, the start of the modern era in Napa Valley. Caymus "Special Selection" was rated #1 with an average score of 94.6 out of 100, and Caymus "Napa Valley" rated #14, averaging 91.7 points.

Caymus Napa valley CabNapa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Caymus enjoys an enviable record - have they ever had an off vintage for Cabernet? Demand continues to soar but production levels have declined. Always lush, concentrated and dramatic, it is now composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon. The addition of either Merlot or Cabernet Franc is vintage dependent. In addition to their own Rutherford Bench fruit they source from outstanding growers on the Rutherford Bench, Mount Veeder, and Atlas Peak.

Aromas of sweet bing cherry and ripe, lush plum invite the first sip. The opulent sweetness of peak-season, fully-ripe fruit brings about abundant yet soft tannins. The core of this wine is a silky and amiably rich, a textured base, with a pure Napa Valley Cabernet focus. Flavors of cocoa, currant and sweet tobacco follow. This rich and chalky wine, devoid of assertive astringencies, drinks well now and should endure for a decade or more.
"Full-blown, ripe and rich, with intense and sharply focused dried currant, wild berry and blackberry fruit that's still fairly tannic at this stage. Ends with a long, persistent finish. Best from 2010 through 2015. 33,900 cases made."

Consistently one of the most highly regarded and expensive California wines. From a 73 acre estate vineyard formerly planted to walnuts and plums. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French Oak for refinement.

"Firm, intense and well-structured, with a mix of spicy oak, red and black currant, mineral, sage and dusty berry. Turns elegant and refined, yet shows a sturdy backbone on the finish. Best from 2009 to 2014."
